What Are Bali Bags Made From? A Guide to Rattan, Pandan and Bamboo

Bali bags are some of the most-asked-about pieces in the shop, and the questions are usually the same: what are they made from, how do I look after one, and how do I style it? Here’s everything I’ve learned.

What they’re made from

Every bag in our collection is handmade in Bali from natural materials. You’ll find rattan, a strong, flexible vine woven into structured shapes. You’ll also find pandan, a leaf that is dried, dyed and hand-woven into colourful totes, and bamboo, which gives some bags a lighter, more rustic look. Because each one is woven by hand, no two are exactly alike.

The batik lining

Open a Bali bag and you’ll find a vibrant, one-off batik lining. Batik is a traditional method of patterning fabric with wax and dye, so every lining is a little surprise.

How to style one

Bali bags suit a relaxed, boho look, but they dress up easily. Use a tote for the market, the beach or a day out, or choose a crossbody to keep your hands free. A colourful bag charm adds personality, and a natural rattan bag looks lovely against linen and denim.

Looking after yours

Natural materials like a gentle touch. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, keep it out of heavy rain and away from direct heat, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Store it somewhere it can keep its shape.
